Student Technology Recommendation
This page provides recommendations for minimum and recommended device, software, and internet resources students should have to use online instructional tools with minimal technical issues. Please visit the Student Computer Access Expectations and Assistance page for more information on student technology, how to access computer labs, purchase discounted computers and software, and answers to frequently asked questions.
Note: Workstations in UHD's computer labs meet or exceed these recommended requirements. Students are encouraged to use these labs when their personal devices do not meet the following specifications.
1. Computer Hardware Recommendations
A computer (desktop/laptop), less than 5 years old is strongly recommended for the best experience. While newer tablets or smartphones can be used for some tasks, they have limited functionality and are not recommended for taking exams or submitting major assignments.
Minimum Specifications
- Processor: Intel Core i3 or faster
- RAM: 8GB
- Hard disk space: 256GB
- Speakers or headset with microphone
- Built-in or external Webcam
- WiFi or Ethernet connection
Recommended Specifications
- Processor: Intel Core i5 or faster
- RAM: 16GB
- Hard disk space: 512GB
- Speakers or headset with microphone
- Built-in or external Webcam
- WiFi or Ethernet connection
Hardware Notes:
- Storage (SSD): A Solid State Drive (SSD) is critical for performance. Older computers with traditional hard disk drives (HDD) will be significantly slower.
- Chromebooks: Chromebooks are not recommended as they may be incompatible with specific third-party tools or software required in some Canvas courses.
- Peripherals: If your computer does not have built-in microphone, ensure your webcam or headset does.
2. Software Recommendations
Keeping your operating system and web browser updated is essential for security and compatibility.
Operating System (OS):
- Windows 11
- MacOS 12 (Monterey) or newer
- Mobile (for supplemental use only): iOS 16 / iPadOS 16 or newer; Android 12 or newer
Windos OS software is available to all registered UHD students through Azure Dev Tools for Teaching
Web Browsers:
Use the latest version of a modern browser for the best compatibility with Canvas and other UHD systems:
- Recommended: Download Mozilla Firefox Download Google Chrome
- Compatible: The latest version of Microsoft Edge is also supported.
- Not Supported: Do not use Internet Explorer. This browser is obsolete and will not work with Canvas.
Productivity Software
- Microsoft 365 Available for free to all UHD students. This includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams
- Adobe Acrobat Reader For viewing, printing, and signing PDF documents.
3. Internet Connection Requirements
A stable, high-speed internet connection is necessary for all online courses.
- Minimum Speed: 1.5 Mbps download speed (for basic tasks and standard-definition video).
- Recommended Speed: 10Mbps download and 2Mbps upload speed (or higher) is strongly recommended for stable synchronous meetings (Zoom, Teams) and high-definition video streaming.
- Connection Type: A wired (Ethernet) connection is more stable than WiFi.
- Shared Connections: If you share internet with family or roommates, your available bandwidth may decrease. Ask them to avoid high-bandwidth activities (e.g., streaming movies, online gaming) during your important class meetings or exams.
4. Online Coursework & Meetings (Canvas, Zoom, Teams)
For the best results, always use a full-function desktop or laptop computer for synchronous meetings and graded work.
- Close other applications: Shut down all other programs (especially email, social media, and streaming services) to dedicate your computer's resources to your class.
- Manage video: Unless your instructor requires it, keep your camera turned off to save bandwidth.
- Mute your microphone: Keep you mic muted until you are called on to speak.
Using Mobile Devices (Phones & Tablets)
While the Canvas Mobile app is available, it provides limited functionality.
- DO use mobile devices for:
- Viewing course content (notes, articles, files).
- Watching lecture videos.
- Checking announcements or grades.
- Critical Warning: Do not use a mobile device (phone or tablet) for high-stakes activities.
Performance is unpredictable. Always use a desktop or laptop computer for:
- Taking quizzes or exams.
- Submitting assignments.
- Participating in graded discussions or activities.
- For a full list of compatible systems, see the supported Canvas browsers. Canvas Support page.
