Academic Computing Labs at UHD: Policies and Guidelines

The Academic Computing Labs at UHD’s One Main Building, Commerce Street Building, Shea Building, and UHD Northwest provide essential computing resources and user support for instructional activities.

All users of these labs must adhere to the following regulations:

Lab Access

  • Only UHD students, faculty, and staff are eligible to use academic computing facilities. Access for others requires approval from Lab Managers.

Conduct in the Lab

  • Be courteous and responsible: Respect others using the facility.
  • Children in the lab: Parents should avoid bringing children. If necessary, they must supervise them at all times. Disruptive behavior will result in being asked to leave.
  • No food or drinks: All food and drink, including sealed containers, are prohibited in the labs. Please store these in a backpack or bag.
  • Cell phone use: Cell phones must be set to vibrate or silent. Calls should be taken outside the lab.
  • Minimize noise: Keep noise and conversations to a minimum to avoid disturbing others.

Accounts

  • University purposes only: All UHD-issued accounts are for university-related activities. They are not to be used for personal business or recreation.

Using the Lab

  • No games: Games are prohibited unless required for academic purposes. Students found playing games will be asked to leave.
  • PC configurations: Students may not install software or alter existing programs on lab computers.
  • Laptop checkout: Laptops can be checked out for on-campus use at labs in S800, C300, and B200.
  • Report issues: Any malfunctioning equipment or software should be reported to lab staff, not repaired by users.
  • File saving: Do not save files on lab computers. Data will be lost when the computer restarts. Use personal storage like USB drives.
  • Server storage: Each student has 20MB of storage on the Linux server for file storage (e.g., Word or PowerPoint documents).
  • Computer time limit: During peak times, a two-hour limit on workstations may be enforced. If no one is waiting, students may continue working.

Print Account

  • UHD students receive a 500-sheet black-and-white print credit for academic purposes each semester. If the print credit is depleted, students can purchase additional credits through various UHD payment methods.

Lab Security

  • Account security: Only use your own account, and do not share passwords. Users are responsible for all activity on their accounts.
  • Report suspicious activity: If you suspect unauthorized access to your account, notify the Manager of Student Technology Services immediately.
  • No hacking: Attempting to infiltrate any system or network is strictly prohibited.
  • External access: Users must comply with UHD’s external network policies.

By following these guidelines, you ensure that the Academic Computing Labs remain a productive and secure environment for everyone at UHD.
