On May 20, 2026, The President’s Lecture Series celebrated Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with an in-depth look at the remarkable life journey of Houston immigration attorney Harry Gee Jr.—a journey shaped by resilience, service, and family values across generations. Educational consultant Nancy J. Li moderated “Legacy and Leadership Featuring Harry Gee Jr. and His Children” a powerful conversation with Gee and his children, Andrew Gee, Sonja Gee, and Claudia Gee Vassar, explored the meanings of legacy, leadership, and the immigrant experience. The event was open to all.
Earth Day: President’s Lecture on Sustainability
On April 22, 2026, UHD’s President’s Lecture Series celebrated Earth Day with a provocative exploration of our planet’s future. The President’s Lecture Series hosted a panel of renowned experts for “Sustainability Transitions in the Anthropocene” in the Fondren Commons of the College of Sciences and Technology Building. Moderated by UHD Professor Poggio, the panel discussion brought together innovative leaders in anthropology and design to explore cultural and systemic pathways toward more just and resilient futures.
When Failure is the Best Option – Leading Through Fear and Risk
On February 24, 2026, UHD’s President’s Lecture Series hosted a special installment in honor of Black History Month – welcoming Brian E. Francis, speaker, author, poet, and seasoned public-sector executive. Drawing on 36 years of public service, including 22 in executive leadership, Francis delivered his presentation, “When Failure Is the Best Option.” He challenged the traditional perfectionist model of leadership and invited attendees to see failure as a catalyst for resilience, courageous decision-making, and inclusive, transformational change.
