Twenty-five years ago this September 11, tragedy hit New York, Arlington County, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania, sending a shockwave around the world. In memory of the 2,977 people who lost their lives, the thousands who were injured, and the brave first responders who rushed in to save lives, UHD will hold a moment of silence at 10 a.m. this Friday, September 11. The campus community is encouraged to join us on the South Deck at that time.
The W.I. Dykes Library is also screening the documentary “7 Days in September,” a 2002 film by Steven Rosenbaum that captures the immediate impact of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks through the eyes of ordinary Americans in New York City. It presents raw, on‑the‑street footage shot as early as 10:05 a.m. on 9/11, including scenes from around the World Trade Center, rescue operations, and the lives of people in the days after the tragedy.
There will be two screenings of the film:
· Thursday, Sept. 10: 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Fondren Commons at the College of Sciences & Technology building
· Friday, Sept. 11: Noon to 1:30 p.m., N420, One Main Building

This year’s 9/11 GatorServe will benefit the Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr., from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 12. Gators will join other volunteers through JustServe to align and clean headstones as well as rake, clean, and sweep the grounds. In this way, Gators will amplify their time and energy by joining with others to honor U.S. veterans and their families. The day will begin with a special ceremony with comments from those who were at Ground Zero.
All supplies and training will be provided, and volunteers will receive a free event shirt and catered lunch. Volunteers are required to register.
