Bachelor of Science in Geoscience
The Bachelor of Science in Geosciences at the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) provides a strong foundation in Earth sciences and prepares students for diverse careers or graduate study. The curriculum combines classroom instruction with hands-on laboratory, research, and field experiences to develop scientific knowledge, analytical abilities, and practical geoscience skills.
Graduates are prepared for careers in energy and mineral resources, environmental consulting, natural resource management, groundwater and soil assessment, geologic hazards, climate and watershed studies, education, and related fields. Career opportunities are available with energy and environmental industries, consulting firms, government agencies, educational institutions, and other organizations that rely on geoscience expertise. Students benefit from small class sizes, faculty mentoring, modern laboratories, and opportunities for research and field-based learning.
PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES
Graduates who earn a BS in Geosciences will be able to:
- Problem Solving: Graduates will be able to carry out independent project-based activities, using geological observations and data to solve a problem.
- Basic Knowledge: Graduates will have the basic knowledge of their curriculum, including elements of mineralogy, petrology, stratigraphy, and plate tectonics.
- Laboratory Skills: Graduates will have laboratory skills common to modern laboratories, particularly in the use of a Brunton compass and a petrographic microscope.
